Clear message

This is another engineering management unit. The lectures are a mix of ChrisCroft going through the notes, and him telling stories about engineering projects which may be marginally relevant to the course content.

The primary assessment is a company simulation game called the Business Policy Game. You work in teams of 5 or 6 to run a simulated company where you produce and sell widgets in Merica and Sereno (aka the USA and Mexico). You control the production lines, hours worked, product quality, marketing budget and salesforce, and the overall winning team gets $5 from every person taking the course. However, your actual marks will be based on the policy you come up with for your company, and a status report saying describing how well your policy worked. There are also 3 multiple choice tests during the semester.

In addition to all of this, there is an Industrial Practice component tacked onto the course. This requires you to attend two safety lectures run by the EE workshop and pass a multiple choice safety test. You also need to attend 5 labs (2x PCB design, 1x metalwork, 1x PCB manufacture, 1x soldering and assembly) in which you will design the PCB and construct a simple circuit from a provided schematic.

The unit has no exam.

It can actually be a lot of fun if you try. There are certainly worse units on offer.

Usually taken by ChrisCroft, taken by someone else in 2008 (Croft is on sabatical).
