How to prepare for UCC Camp.

This document aims to help all those unsure of what to bring and pack to UCC Camp and to ensure that your computer doesn't chew up our precious quota.

Camp 2017

The 2017 UCC Camp is being held at Camp Leschenaultia, Chidlow from Friday, 21st July to Monday, 24th July. More details can be found here.
Directions to the campsite can also be found here.

Packing for Camp

This is the list of essentials excluding your computer.
In the past, and looking at forecasts, it will be very cold at camp, and we mean VERY cold. Current forecasts look to be at high teen maximums and 3 to 5 degrees at night, be sure to take this into account.

  • Clothes for 3 days (Sat, Sun and Mon)
  • Jackets and coats are a must!
  • Bedding, incl. Sleeping Bag, Pillow, Blankets
  • Towel and Toiletries
  • Earplugs if you are a light sleeper
  • Any medication you require
  • A blanket to snuggle in at your computer
  • A floor heater if you have one!

Bringing your Computer to Camp

Of course it would never be UCC Camp without some good ol' lanning. A majority of the activities will be conducted using a general-purpose computing device.

Ensure to bring these along with your computer:

  • Tower and Monitor (I hope these were already on your list)
  • Relevant cables and accessories necessary for the function of your device (IECs, keyboard, etc.)
  • Bring a mousepad along with your mouse!
  • Headphones or a headset with cable slack is a must, speakers will generally not be permitted at camp.
  • Ensure your computer has an ethernet port (you know, the internet one), a wireless network will not be set up.
  • A non-surge-protected powerboard to hook your computer up to.

Disabling Automatic Updates

Internet is limited at camp! Ensure to disable any automatic updates or downloads that your computer currently runs.
At list of things to look out for:

  • Disabling automatic Windows Updates: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/306525

  • Disabling Steam Game Updates: For this Steam Limiter is recommended.

  • Disabling Steam Cloud: Steam > Settings > Cloud > Untick first option "Enable steam cloud synchronisation"

  • Disable all cloud synchronisation services such as Dropbox and Google Drive

File Sharing

File Sharing at camp is a well established custom where many attendees share a folder containing various files that are of interest to others and this can all be done within the network. Last year D-LAN was used quite successfully and we encourage all attendees to install it before camp. Be sure to hash the files you want to share before coming along, it can be a long process!

Games

Games at camp are usually decided on the spot with whoever has the game and feels like playing it. At this camp a whiteboard system will be utilised to help organise bigger games which everyone can join. If there is a game you want to play, ensure that you have fully updated it beforehand.

A list of games people have expressed interest in playing follows:

  • Minecraft
  • DOTA0
  • Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
  • The Ship
  • Hidden: Source
  • Civilisation V
  • Age of Empires II HD
  • Warcraft 3 Mods
  • Fighting Games
  • Chivalry and TF2
  • Railroads

  • Call of Duty 2
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive
  • Artemis
  • Fistful of Frags
  • Age of Mythology
  • Halo:CE

  • osu!
  • Unreal Tournament 2004

If you don't currently have the following games, then it might be an idea to get your hands on them if you would like to play them:

  • The Ship
  • Minecraft
  • Killing Floor (1 or 2)
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive
  • Age of Mythology
  • Call of Duty 2
