== About == So at the behest of quite a few members complaining that UCC isn't a friendly place for non-techies, this year we are going to be trying to create a much more helpful atmosphere for incoming freshers (and current members as well). The first major step on this is the Fresher Guide. In years past the guide has been rather 'Wall of Text-y' and had a tendency to contain a lot of information that wouldn't help most freshers. == What you can do == WRITE! Look up a copy of the Fresher Guide on UCCs website and if there is something that doesn't seem helpful or could be better in your mind, then rewrite the section. I don;t care if we end up having 6 rewrites of the same part, I want to see what language the club thinks we should be using! EDIT! Calling all Grammar Nazis... We don't wanna look like uneducated peons (such as myself) so we need people to go through with a fine tooth comb and tell us all the nitty gritty things that are wrong with our sentence structure and EVERYTHING. NEW IDEAS Think there is a way of showing information that we haven't thought of? MENTION IT. This guide should be reasonably simple and easy to get information out of so if theres an idea you have, we'd love to hear it. == Layout == It has been suggested that we have two introductory documents. One being the Fresher Guide, which would be a pretty short basics document and a UCC Manual. If we have time, this is a great idea so what lies below is the layout ideas of BOTH documents, if however we run out of time we may just merge information. FRESHER GUIDE '''Section 1: Welcome''' * Presidents Welcome (DONE) * About The UCC (The selling points) '''Section 2: Finding Us''' * Finding UCC * Map/Photos '''Section 3: Your account and Dispense''' * Setting Up Your Account * Dispense 101 '''Section 4: Events, Projects and other cool stuff''' * LOOK AT ALL THE REASON YOU SHOULD BECOME A MEMBER!! Please start your membership by locating our clubroom filled with computers (most of which can play games), create your account (giving you access to our computers, more reliable than the university machines) and then discover our internet-connected coke and snack machines (along with complimentary $5 credit). Once you've settled in, remember to attend our fresher welcome and "Learn to Linux [TM]" at the end of the first week (free pizza will be provided), followed by a LAN party the next Friday. Our club AGM is in Welcome to Uni, and welcome to the UCC. Enjoy your time at the UCC, and we hope to see you around the clubroom. John Hodge [TPG] UCC President 2012 ==== Step 2: Getting an Account ==== Your UCC account is one of the most important things you can have as a member. It lets you log into any of our clubroom machines, as well as granting you access to our user servers, wireless network and online drink and snack machines. * Once you're in the clubroom, ask a committee or wheel member to set up your account. Make sure you have your membership sticker ready (it's probably on your student card). Now that you have an account, you can use it to log into any of our clubroom machines. If you want to log onto one of our servers, you'll need to use the ssh program (described later in this very guide). If you're having trouble, just ask someone in the clubroom --- we don't bite! Accessing the UCC wireless network can be a bit tricky (particularly on Windows machines). See http://wiki.ucc.asn.au/Wifi if you're having any trouble. ==== Step 4: Communication Channels ==== ===== Mailing Lists ===== The UCC mailing lists are the best way of getting in touch with other UCCans. Many of our members are not able to be around the clubroom due to work commitments, or because they are no longer in Perth. Yet still these members retain a partially active interest in the club through its mailing lists. UCC hosts numerous mailing lists, for all manner of topics, browsable via the web interface listed below. The UCC has a number of lists that you might be interested in: *ucc-announce – all new members are automatically subscribed to this list *ucc – the general discussion list, most of UCC's discussion takes place on this list, as well as announcements for informal events like parties and trips to the pub (when you're old enough). Most UCCans are subscribed to this list, subscribe now. *committee – the open committee list, anyone interested in committee matters can sign up to this mailing list. The committee also has a private list for sensitive matters: committee-only. *tech – the list for discussing the UCC's hardware and computers. General computer discussion should take place on the ucc list instead. You can subscribe to mailing lists from our very retro interface at http://lists.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au/mailman/listinfo ===== IRC ===== Without a doubt, the easiest way to waste time in or out of UCC is chatting on our Internet Relay Chat (IRC) server. It's also a great way to get help with problems you're having at UCC, with computers generally, or with Uni life. You can connect with an IRC client to irc.ucc.asn.au:6667 and join the channel #ucc, or with a web browser go to http://irc.ucc.asn.au ===== Facebook ===== Join UCC on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/universitycomputerclub/ |

What you can do
WRITE! Look up a copy of the Fresher Guide on UCCs website and if there is something that doesn't seem helpful or could be better in your mind, then rewrite the section. I don;t care if we end up having 6 rewrites of the same part, I want to see what language the club thinks we should be using!

NEW IDEAS Think there is a way of showing information that we haven't thought of? MENTION IT. This guide should be reasonably simple and easy to get information out of so if theres an idea you have, we'd love to hear it.
Layout
It has been suggested that we have two introductory documents. One being the Fresher Guide, which would be a pretty short basics document and a UCC Manual. If we have time, this is a great idea so what lies below is the layout ideas of BOTH documents, if however we run out of time we may just merge information.

PRESIDENT'S SPEECH 2013

- AS YOUR PRESIDENT, IT IS MY JOB TO POINT OUT THAT YOU ARE TINY AND USELESS. HOWEVER, WITH TIME AND CARE, YOU MAY MATURE TO THE POINT THAT YOU MAY BE CONSIDERED A SECOND YEAR, IF YOU CONTINUE TO DO WELL, YOU MAY EVEN BE CALLED HUMAN.

President’s Speech 2.013x10^3
Hey everyone!!! I'm your president for 2012 - Ryan!! But everyone calls me "Rye-Rye" (we all give each other silly names like that - it's just one of the fun, socialable things we do :P)
We're a super fun club to be in but we're also a bit nerdy XD lol. Don't think we're weird or anything butヽ(*≧ω≦)ノ
We’re all super into video games (my favourite is the one where you play as Zelda (*▽*)). Also there are some people who can do SUPER amazing stuff with computers (idk much about that tho XD)
Remember, the most important thing about our club is to HAVE FUN!!! We also have clubs near us like UWAnime (omg so kawaii desu right XD) so if you’re into things like Bleach and Naruto (Sasuke x Sakura 4 LIEF!!) they’re super cool and you should definitely check them out!
We also have a facebook page so you should totally like it and share it with all your friends. You should also subscribe to my youtube channels if you wants updates and stuff in the future. I also post some other personal stuff – anime AMV’s (One Piece and stuff), songs (I write and compose too!!) and other totes cool stuff like that. Don’t forget to like and comment!!
Anyway, I’ll wrap this up by saying UCC is totally the coolest club at UWA and we absolutely love any new members! ~Arigatou Gozaimasu!!!~

Jono's contribution
=== MUSIC AT UCC: ROBOTNIK === The music system commonly known as robotnik is frequently playing music in the clubroom and can be controlled by any member. Any member can access robotnik from a web browser on one of the clubroom machines by simply putting robotnik/ into the address bar. Most of the music is located in the space directory and is usually listed by artist but may consist of separate folders created by members. * To add to the playlist, click add button next to any song file or just click the title to immediately play the song. Ask any committee, door, or coke member to assist you with this.
